LISTSERV is the first and so far the only email list management software to provide email lists with built-in virus protection. The integrated F-Secure Anti-Virus system scans every message and attachment posted to a mailing list for viruses. If a virus is detected, the message is automatically rejected. The F-Secure Anti-Virus system is engineered for fast, automatic virus database updates and uses multiple scanning engines, providing LISTSERV lists with the best possible virus protection.

This virus protection is available for Windows Server 2003/2000/XP/Vista and Linux, and through the Anti-Virus Station (AVS), to all other LISTSERV platforms.
Partial support for anti-virus systems other than F-Secure is also available. Other anti-virus systems, however, cannot be fully integrated with LISTSERV in the same way as F-Secure Anti-Virus.
The LISTSERV AVS extends this virus protection to operating systems other than Windows Server 2003/2000/XP/Vista and Linux. The AVS operates transparently to the user. It runs on a Windows Server 2003/2000/XP/Vista or Linux server and is separate from the main LISTSERV server. The AVS works by having the production LISTSERV server forward messages to the AVS server, where they are scanned for viruses by the anti-virus system. If a virus is detected, the message is automatically rejected. The AVS enables all customers running LISTSERV Classic or HPO to benefit from virus protection, regardless of operating system.

Today, virus protection is commonly viewed as a crucial component that no one can afford to go without. Why then have email lists gone without virus protection for so long? The possible spread of an email virus can be disastrous when sent to an email list or posted to a discussion group with hundreds, thousands or even millions of subscribers. Imagine the damage to your company reputation if you accidentally sent a virus to all your subscribers.
It is important to remember that even though your individual workstation may have virus protection, it doesn't necessarily mean that your incoming and outgoing mail is scanned. Unless the individual messages are scanned before being delivered to subscribers of your email lists, it is still possible to unintentionally contribute to the spread of viruses.
The core of anti-virus software is the diagnosis of new viruses and development of what is called a pattern file, which tells computers how to scan for the presence of each virus. Distribution is the key. The challenge is no longer generating the file but deploying it. F-Secure prides itself on fast average response time from detection to production of a pattern file, with on-the-hour updates to files over the Web.
F-Secure Anti-Virus is engineered for fast, automatic virus database updates – a key advantage in the email virus protection market. In addition, it is the only anti-virus software with multiple scanning engines, reducing the risk that any harmful viruses could escape detection.
