LISTSERV is a registered trademark.
The term LISTSERV is a registered trademark name for L-Soft's computer program used to manage email lists. Eric Thomas, Founder and CEO of L-Soft, developed the software in 1986 and registered LISTSERV as a trademark in 1996.
Similar to other registered trademarks, LISTSERV should not be used to refer to the actual lists themselves. Even if people are using LISTSERV to manage their lists, they should refrain from using the term in a generic way although the term "LISTSERV lists" can be used in these cases. Alternative terms that can be used include "electronic mailing lists," "email lists," and "email newsletters." L-Soft continues its campaign to raise awareness on this issue by notifying sites and publications when there is violation in the usage of the trademark.
See Guidelines for Proper Usage of the LISTSERV® Trademark for more details about proper trademark usage.
