LISTSERV Online Celebration: Invitation to Party

L-Soft is excited to announce that the videocast and live chat with Eric Thomas, L-Soft Founder and CEO, who developed LISTSERV in 1986, will take place September 15, 2011, at 12 noon U.S. Eastern Time. We invite you and your colleagues, co-list owners, subscribers and friends to join the online celebration of a quarter-century of the software that pioneered opt-in email list communication. Please join the party with L-Soft staff and customers worldwide by organizing get-togethers with other LISTSERV enthusiasts on September 15. It's a fun opportunity to participate in the online chat while enjoying refreshments – after all, it's at breakfast time on the U.S. West Coast, lunchtime on the U.S. East Coast and after-work time in Europe ... and Australia.

Meanwhile, remember to submit your live chat questions today for the highest priority. Have you ever wondered why Eric invented LISTSERV? Are you curious how LISTSERV has changed over the years? Do you want to know what some of the very first LISTSERV lists were? Are you interested to hear Eric's vision of the next quarter-century of LISTSERV and the permission email industry? Just ask!

What's Your LISTSERV Story?

The first LISTSERV stories are in, and we invite you to share yours. Tell us how LISTSERV software or an email list that runs on LISTSERV software has helped you in your work or your life in general.

Whether you're an early adopter or a new subscriber, we want to hear from you. Meanwhile, we welcome you to read the stories that have already been submitted by other LISTSERV enthusiasts:

"I believe our VM node, ASUACAD, was assigned license #95 back in the mid '80s. It was running initially on an IBM 4381 VM/HPO. I remember Eric when he was a student at FRECP11 and eventually writing routines for Relay, Chat, and of course LISTSERV. We have been running LISTSERV continuously since then – VM/CMS, Dec's digital unix, Solaris and currently as a VM Linux guest under Xenserver.

... I still see some of the old timers still posting on LSTSRV-L, it sure brings back a lot of memories in an era when spam, malware and viruses were unknown words.

I hope I'm still alive for your 50th anniversary."

Tech Tip: LISTSERV

LISTSERV Tech Tip

Q: Why do my logs show my LISTSERV server sending mail to other LISTSERV sites?

Answer by Liam Kelly
Senior Consulting Analyst, L-Soft

New LISTSERV customers are often confused to look in their log files and find that their LISTSERV server is sending and receiving mail to and from other LISTSERV sites. The short answer is that by default, LISTSERV servers communicate with one another to share things like spam alerts, network routing updates and list mail distribution. This feature can be enabled or disabled by way of the RUNMODE site configuration variable. For the longer answer, we need to go back in time to the days when bandwidth was scarce, server time was expensive and network connectivity wasn't necessarily an "always-on" resource.
