Level-Set Upgrade for All Customers

Upgrade Is Critical to Maintain Anti-Virus Protection Beyond 2011

By L-Soft Staff

LISTSERV 16.0-2011a Level Set

The LISTSERV 16.0-2011a level set is now available and contains all known fixes, patches and between-release enhancements up to November 8, 2011. L-Soft recommends that all sites running earlier versions of LISTSERV upgrade to this level set.

LISTSERV Classic and LISTSERV HPO sites running F-Secure Anti-Virus or F-Secure Linux Security should also be aware that all versions of the F-Secure anti-virus product older than version 9 will be completely unsupported by F-Secure by the end of 2011. L-Soft therefore strongly recommends that all sites upgrade to LISTSERV 16.0-2011a and install the latest version of FSAV to ensure uninterrupted protection against viruses and other malware.

Upgrading is free for customers with valid maintenance and support. A valid LISTSERV 16.0 License Activation Key (LAK) is needed before upgrading. If you do not have a LISTSERV 16.0 product LAK, please contact: sales@lsoft.com. If you have any technical questions regarding your LISTSERV license and virus protection, contact: support@lsoft.com. L-Soft also offers remote installation and upgrading services.

Tech Tip: LISTSERV

LISTSERV Tech Tip

Q: How can I prevent encoding artifacts from showing up in my plain text digests?

Answer by Ben Parker
Chief Corporate Consultant, L-Soft

Back in the mists of time when people were using dial-up to connect to the Internet, it made sense to be able to get a single digest email that collected all the separate email messages from the current day. However, over time, as the sophistication of email has increased – first adding attachments, then foreign languages, then HTML email and email from your phone, plain old "plain text" email has become not-so-plain anymore. This has caused some complaints from digest users as they struggle to read around the artifacts that these email add-ons make to messages that become visible in the digest.

Q: How can I prevent addresses previously unsubscribed from LISTSERV Maestro lists from being re-added?

Answer by Liam Kelly
Senior Consulting Analyst, L-Soft

When it comes to maintaining good relationships with email list subscribers, the importance of respecting list signoff requests cannot be overstated. While this can be easy for lists stored exclusively in LISTSERV or LISTSERV Maestro, it can become a challenge when subscriber data for a LISTSERV Maestro hosted list comes from one or more outside sources. For example, we may use a Hosted Recipient List to send a monthly newsletter, and we may have subscribers unsubscribe from that newsletter over the course of the month. If we run a monthly importer from an external database that populates the Hosted Recipient List with email addresses, we probably don't want to re-subscribe those addresses that had left the list. The list protection feature of LISTSERV Maestro 5.0 (currently in public beta) addresses just this situation.
