Double Opt-in Turns 15:
Looking Back, Looking Ahead

Double Opt-in Turns 15

In 1993, LISTSERV® was the first email list management software to introduce double opt-in subscriptions for people joining a mailing list. With the 15th anniversary of double opt-in upon us, Eric Thomas, L-Soft founder and CEO and LISTSERV creator, answers some questions about this best practice and gives us a glimpse of what's to come in the next version of LISTSERV.

Q: What are feedback loops and why are they important to the deliverability of my email?

Answer by John Harlan
Vice President, Computer Services, L-Soft

Feedback loops are a mechanism implemented by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to convey back to the originating mailer any complaints the ISP has received from its users regarding a specific email message. Acting on the feedback loop information, originating mailers can protect their sender reputation with the ISP by removing the complaining user from their recipient address data.

CrimEnet Wins LISTSERV Choice Awards

L-Soft has selected CrimEnet, an email network that connects law enforcement personnel to solve crimes, as the 2007-08 winner in its global email list recognition program. CrimEnet – The Crime Electronic Network – was founded by Capt. Frank Anderson and his colleagues in Indiana's St. Joseph County Police Department. CrimEnet has been using email to facilitate police investigations across three states and 75 agencies for five years, with excellent results.

CrimEnet member Sgt. Mike Kellems, LaPorte County Sheriff's Department, Ind., says: "Congratulations on a well-deserved

award! Communication is the key to success in any operation, particularly in the public service sector. CrimEnet has enabled police officers from numerous counties and several states to be able to communicate. As a 20+ year veteran of law enforcement, I've seen countless opportunities pass us by because of a lack of communication. CrimEnet has effectively bridged that gap."

Q: Why would I want to use LISTSERV Maestro's message templates? Aren't they too generic?

Answer by Françoise Becker
VP Software Engineering, L-Soft

There are many reasons to use LISTSERV Maestro message templates, but the main reasons are that they are easy to use. They'll give your messages a consistent look and feel, and they'll reduce your need for testing. However, maintaining a consistent look does not have to mean following a rigid or generic pattern. A well-designed template can allow a lot of flexibility and can give you that unique look you want for your messages. Creating that unique look doesn't require designing your own templates; LISTSERV Maestro also comes standard with several system templates that can be customized to fit your needs.
