HTML: Lost in the Mail

The U.S. Department of Defense recently announced that it would no longer accept HTML email. Other organizations may follow suit in the future. Email-borne viruses and trojans can only be propagated using HTML email. Text messages are guaranteed to be safe. On the other hand, HTML is a much richer medium in which to convey your message. Studies show that more email users prefer HTML messages, but those who prefer text messages tend to feel strongly about it.

L-Soft is completely phasing out the legacy mailing software LSMTP. The company will continue to honor current LSMTP support and maintenance contracts but will not renew support agreements going forward. During the phase-out period, L-Soft is making one-time HDMail upgrade offers that are truly in a class of their own: with savings of up to 50 percent. This one- time offer is only valid until June 30, 2007.

LISTSERV Tech Tip

Q: How can I limit the rate at which LISTSERV delivers mail?

Answer by Liam Kelly
Senior Consulting Analyst, L-Soft

L-Soft has designed LISTSERV HPO to be the fastest and most resource-efficient mailing list manager available. However, there may be situations in which the LISTSERV administrator needs to slow LISTSERV's delivery of outbound mail to the SMTP server to avoid saturating the outbound Internet connection. Starting with LISTSERV version 15.0, LISTSERV is able to do such rate limiting.

LISTSERV Maestro Tech Tip

Q: How can I accommodate recipients who prefer HTML and recipients who prefer text messages in a single job?

Answer by Holly Taylor
Technical Writer, L-Soft

Recipient data can be collected so that you know the format that each recipient prefers to receive. Once collected, this data can be used to send the preferred format to each recipient, all within the same job. For this to happen, a conditional statement needs to be set up so it can run against the recipient data. Using conditional content makes it possible to prepare a single job for recipients who prefer HTML and for those who prefer plain text, respecting each recipient's choice as well as saving time and reducing the risk for errors that may occur when sending multiple jobs.
