In Spite of Spam, Email Communities are Thriving

LISTSERV Choice Award winners engage subscriber interaction worldwide

Bethesda, MD (September 10, 2004) – L-Soft, the premier provider of email list management technology, today announced winners for two categories of the LISTSERV Choice Awards program that was launched to celebrate L-Soft's 10-Year Anniversary. Charitytalk is the winner of the Philanthropic List Award, and DorothyL is the winner of the Email Community Award.

Although spam is progressively making up a larger portion of all mail traffic, this has not dampened the enthusiasm of email communities. The nominated lists so far cover a large spectrum of topics and people: adopters of retired racing greyhounds, bird watchers, lactation professionals, menopausal women, support groups around fibromyalgia, opera lovers, people with face blindness, and more. Email lists remain just as needed and convenient as before the spam problem.

The "Big Tent" discussion list of the nonprofit world, Charitytalk, won the Philanthropic List Award thanks to its incredible reach and positive effect on society. This list of 700 subscribers has spawned more than 200 public and private email lists serving CharityChannel, an online community of more than 150,000 voluntary-sector professionals on every continent of the world. "Charitytalk eliminates the distance and enables voluntary-sector professionals in every corner of the globe to discuss and help one another. By what other means than email lists could they have a direct access to their worldwide colleagues when needed?" says Outi Tuomaala, European VP of Marketing for L-Soft.

The e-conference list of more than 3,000 lovers of the mystery literature genre, DorothyL stood out as the winner of the Email Community Award. Its high functionality connects enthusiastic and devoted subscribers such as readers, writers, would-be writers, librarians, editors, publishers, booksellers and collectors on the Internet. "Just imagine that you don't have to travel to a conference but still have the opportunity to discuss your beloved mystery topics with thousands of people from 25 countries on an email list," says Tuomaala.

In celebration of its 10th Anniversary, L-Soft has launched the LISTSERV Choice Awards. The contest invites all LISTSERV email list enthusiasts to participate throughout 2004 in the award program for the most interesting, creative, innovative or exemplary usage of L-Soft software worldwide. The next category is the Announcement List Award with a nomination deadline of September 15, 2004. The grand prize winner of all LISTSERV Choice Award categories will be announced in January 2005.
